Travertine has natural holes and channels during fabrication the holes are filled and the surface is honed, or polished. If you turn the tile over you can see the holes and channels on the unfinished side of the tile. When a light is placed behind the tile, you can see areas where a natural hole or channel is located just below the surface. Eventually the thin layer of stone or fill breaks down or damaged causing the hole or channels to be exposed. When Travertine losses fill the hole should be filled immediately, the area around the hole becomes much more susceptible to further damage.

Travertine Tile Crack Repair

Cracks in travertine can occur for a number of reasons. There could be cracks in the concrete under the tile, there may be voids under the stone that isn't providing enough support. If the Travertine is installed on concrete and the crack goes through more than one tile in a row, the crack is normally caused by settling. If the Travertine was installed over a plywood sub floor it could mean that there is not enough support or the proper underlay was not used. The only way to determine the cause of the cracking is to remove the effected tiles tile and determine the cause. Replacing the tiles may not be possible if matching tile is not available. Filling the cracks with a filler made for filling cracks or fissures may be the answer. The filler can be colored to virtually any color to match the stone and honed or polished to match the finish of the stone.

All calcite-based stones such as Travertine, limestone, marble and onyx can be damaged by anything containing acids such as orange juice, coffee, vinegar, wine mustard and many soft drinks. The mark looks like a water-stain or ring on the Travertine surface and wont go away with cleaning or using a poultice. Etching is a result of a chemical reaction that occurs when an acid comes in contact with all calcite-based stones such as Travertine. Sealing will give you time to wipe up a spill but sealing can not stop the chemical reaction that may leave a mark. Remember to always use coasters and place mats on all calcite based stones. Removing etching on Travertine requires the etching be removed with a diamond abrasive then blended to match the finish of the Travertine.

Etching
Crack
Travertine stone is a form of limestone. Travertine is formed by minerals dissolving in ground water and then being deposited on the earth’s surface by rivers, streams, natural springs, or geysers. Extensive deposits exist at Tivoli, Italy, near Rome, from where its name is derived. It was frequently used in ancient times as a building material. The most notable building constructed mostly from Travertine is the Coliseum in Rome. Travertine can be easily damaged by many household items that contain acids such as lemons, vinegar, juices, beverages and many cleaning products. These acids will etch the stone by leaving marks, rings or dull spots. Travertine is not very hard; using the Mohs scale, Travertine registers 3 to 4 on the Moh’s 1-10 scale. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness can be used to measure the scratch resistance of various minerals. Travertine almost always has holes and channels where water and hot gasses escaped during its formation, you can see these holes on the unfinished side of the tile or slab. In most instances, these holes are “filled” during fabrication with cement like material or resin. Some Travertine is sold with the holes unfilled, giving the stone an old world aged look. Travertine can be cut a couple in different ways vein cut or crosscut cut, each cut will reveal a different pattern. Vein cuts will reveal the bedding planes or strata and crosscuts will reveal a flowery or circular pattern in the stones surface. Travertine comes in many different colors such as ivory, beige, walnut, noce, and gold. The color of travertine is the result of mineral and organic deposits during the formation. Finishes for Travertine vary widely from honed (matte) to highly polish, with honed being the most popular.
What you should know about Traverine …
The holes you see on the edge of this Travertine tile was caused by water and hot gases escaping during formation. Think of Travertine as block of Swiss cheese, as you slice through the cheese new holes are exposed. Most companies that offer Travertine cleaning, honing and polishing use multiple diamond abrasive pads to hone and polish Travertine. The pads can remove to much of the stones surface and cause the holes to be exposed. Once the holes are exposed the holes will fill with soil and the floor will be impossible to clean. In order to restore the Travertine the surfaces will need to be cleaned, holes filled and then refinished. The process can be time consuming, expensive and could have been completely avoided. You made a significant investment in your stone and tile surfaces. With proper care and maintenance it will provide you with many years of enjoyment. Unfortunately the stone, tile and grout restoration industry is one of the few industries that requires no training or certifications.
